I've been doing everything in my control to shoot this film under the best circumstances. I'll drive a couple hours to get that sweet spot during magic hour for two or three shots. I've been lucky so far, and have ended up with a dozen more shots than I planned, but I either need to start lighting my talent or get a faster lens. Since I am shooting incognito at these places, the lens will be my first attempt. I've been using the 24-70mm f/4 and I love it but I need a little more speed. I'm hoping the 35mm f/2 will be a good fill in lens for those scenarios. Oh yeah, I'm also shooting entirely handheld... so I need the IS... so yeah... I'm a moron.

Of course I have been shooting up to 1600 ISO without any noticeable issues, but I'd rather keep it under 800 or lower if I can. And it's funny... with all of the tests I've done over the past couple of years, I never realized how much I love silhouettes. With my D5500, the blacks are so clean I could have underexposed during magic hour and still have noise free shadows, not as easy with the 5D3... especially while trying to not clip the sun and get sun stars.
Nowadays many users like to install Magic Lantern to their Canon DSLR cameras to increase more features, among which recording RAW videos to your CF/SD card is included. But these MLV RAW videosare uncompressed and so will take much CF/SD card space, so many users plan to transfer these MLV RAW videos to their hard drive or other devices for archive or for playback. But these MLV RAW videosalso take much hard drive space and worse still, are not compatible with most popular used devices, media player or video editing applications. To make MLV RAW videos smaller in size for archive ormore playable, most of users will choose to convert the MLV RAW videos to the widely accepted MP4, AVI, MOV, MPEG, ProRes, H.264, etc, for which a professional MLV converter is needed. Among allavailable MLV converters, iDealshare VideoGo is recommended.
In the book I also cover brand new workflows such as direct editing of Canon raw in Premiere and complete guides on how to use newly developed software such as RawMagic, Ginger, Rawanizer and GoPro CineForm converter, for both Mac and Windows users.
The software supports DNG/CinemaDNG files, produced either by CDNG-enabled digital cameras or by Adobe software such as Adobe DNG Converter or Adobe Lightroom according to DNG 1.4 specification. Current list of supported cameras could be found here. Fast CinemaDNG Processor software can import 8/10/12/14/16-bit DNG and PGM images with Bayer pattern created by 3rd-party applications. There is also support of Blackmagic Design CinemaDNG RAW 3:1 and 4:1 formats. Apart from support of BMD format, the software can convert CinemaDNG RAW to standard CinemaDNG (uncompressed or with lossless compression) to offer compatibility of Blackmagic CinemaDNG RAW format with Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects for further editing.
Video production software supporting losslessly compressed CinemaDNG includes Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve, Blackmagic Design Fusion, Assimilate Scratch, FilmLight Baselight, The Foundry NUKE, Lightworks, Adobe Premiere CC, Adobe SpeedGrade CC, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom.
I may have one potential solution to convert DNG to .avi but isn't the point of working with RAW to use an intermediate codec like Cineform just for editing? I also have to consider that the .mlv raw video has pink/blue dots that need to be removed. I can do that with at least one DNG converter (Raw2cdng) that provides chroma smooting. But, it is only creating .DNG images at half resolution. No idea why.
This video is a demonstration of workflow using Resolve- it also explains how to use and install the LUT I made to make your 5dm3 uncompressed magic lantern raw video footage look more like something you would get from a higher end cinema camera (i.e. Alexa, ect) great skin tones, pleasing highlights and shadows.- Hunter Hampton Richards, Vimeo tutorial
Blackmagic RAW has been in development for years and is a next generation hybrid codec that features multiple new technologies such as an advanced de-mosaic algorithm, extensive metadata support, highly optimized GPU and CPU accelerated processing
i thought, cinema dng could be the right format to open the rawdata into the bigger grading world, for example speedgrade and resolve. now we have to see. for now there is this tool for windows and the cdng-converter rawmagic for mac written by thomas worth. my github link was only for first discussion purposes. you will find the CinemaDNG-Dialog in the Magiclantern-Forum.
3. It will increase the whole exposure and that is what you want to drag the noise out from the shadows. After that in your raw converter you can darken the uncliped highlights if you think it is to bright.
Some raw converters like RawTherapee has a raw histogram and it is possible to compare the raw histogram and the jpg histogram. It is also possible to use Rawdigger, but it costs money. My favorite software Darktable doesnt have raw histogram but raw sensor clipping.
Free/libre video editors like Kdenlive, plus tools like Natron compositor and Jubler subtitle editor are now available in AppImage format. This including OpenShot, Shotcut, VidCutter, Avidemux. You can make executable and simply double-click to run these programs in any GNU/Linux distro. These applications in AppImage format are simple like EXE (Windows) and DMG (macOS) to download, store, and run. Plus, AppImage format is "portable" in sense you don't need to install it. Download them below and run your favorite even in LiveCD session. Enjoy!Want to update installed AppImage apps? Simple, use AppImageUpdate!

About AppImageAppImage is a way to package a software (for developer) and to install it (for user) in one-file-per-one-app way that is universal for all GNU/Linux distros. With this, a software can be made available in its website for Windows and Mac and GNU/Linux in their respective formats of .exe, .dmg, and .appimage. To run an AppImage formatted software is the same as EXE and DMG, just let it be executable and double-click it! Nowadays, hundreds of GNU/Linux popular programs has already released as AppImages such as LibreOffice, GIMP, Inkscape, QCAD, and more; so people can just download the .appimage file and run it on GNU/Linux even in the LiveCD session. This article is licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0. 2ff7e9595c
